Celebrating Sultana Siddiqui: Scholarships Honouring Her Legacy at Habib University
On a September evening in Karachi, Habib University marked an important moment for Pakistan’s creative and academic landscape with the launch of the Sultana Siddiqui Distinguished Scholarships, an initiative honouring the HUM Network President for her lasting contributions to media and women’s empowerment.
The evening brought together leaders and creatives from across media, education, and the arts, all gathered to celebrate the launch of the scholarships and the ideas they represent. The discussion centred on how access and visibility can change the way women participate in Pakistan’s creative industries. The collaboration between Habib University and HUM Network set a hopeful tone, reflecting a shared belief that when women are supported and seen, entire fields move forward.

Sultana Siddiqui’s story is one of perseverance and purpose, shaped by a lifelong commitment to storytelling and empowerment. She began her career at PTV when few women worked behind the camera, rising through an industry that offered little precedent for female leadership. Over the years, she directed and produced acclaimed television dramas before founding HUM Network, becoming the first woman in Pakistan to establish and lead a television network. Her journey stands as proof that persistence and vision can transform an entire medium.

Among the speakers was Manahil Duraid, International Business Director at HUM TV and Siddiqui’s granddaughter. Reflecting on her grandmother’s career, she spoke about watching a woman lead with strength in an industry often shaped by men. She shared her hope that these scholarships will help make women’s leadership in media feel natural, something that should be expected, not exceptional.

Sultana Siddiqui’s influence extends beyond television. In 2015, she received an honorary degree from Greenwich University, and in August this year, Buckinghamshire New University in the UK recognised her for her pioneering leadership as a media entrepreneur and advocate for women.
Through the Sultana Siddiqui Distinguished Scholarships, Habib University reaffirms its commitment to nurturing women who will shape the future of storytelling and design, continuing a legacy built on courage, creativity, and purpose.
