Spotify announces Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as the first artist for ICON Pakistan
Spotify unveiled its ICON Pakistan programme at an immersive event titled ‘House of ICON’ at the historic TDF Ghar in Karachi recently, celebrating Pakistan’s rich musical heritage. The event offered an exclusive experience that took attendees on a journey through decades of iconic music, spotlighting the artists and tracks that have shaped Pakistan’s vibrant music landscape since the 1950s. The evening culminated with the unveiling of the first Spotify ICON Pakistan artist: the Shehenshah-e-Qawwali, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
The event was attended by notable celebrities, media personalities, artists and social media influencers, all gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the first Spotify ICON Pakistan, and to witness the magic of Pakistan’s rich music history come to life. Some of the attendees included artists such as Asim Azhar, Young Stunners, Junaid Khan, the former Vital Signs bassist Shahzad ‘Shahi’ Hassan, composer Arshad Mehmood, Bilal Saeed and Spotify’s RADAR artist Umair to name a few.

With over 800 million streams worldwide and nearly 60 million hours of his music listened to on Spotify, his influence is both profound and far-reaching,” said Khan FM, Spotify’s Senior Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Celebrated as one of the most influential qawwali singers in history, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan continues to inspire generations with his deeply soulful music. Since Spotify’s debut in Pakistan in 2021, over 900,000 searches have been made for “Nusrat”. In 2024, his most streamed tracks on the platform include “Mere Rashke Qamar,” “Sochta Houn,” and “Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai. On Spotify, Nusrat ranks among the top five Pakistani artists, a testament to his extraordinary talent and enduring popularity. He has amassed over 5.7 million monthly listeners, with his fan base growing steadily, particularly among younger audiences. Almost 60 percent of his current listeners are from Gen-Z, and over the past year, he has seen a 26 percent year-on-year growth in streams on the platform, further solidifying his lasting impact across generations.
Nusrat’s collaborations with international icons such as Peter Gabriel and Eddie Vedder, combined with his innovative blend of traditional qawwali and contemporary sounds, have earned him a huge local and global following. His music transcends borders and genres, with listeners outside Pakistan coming from India, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Germany.
This enduring influence of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the focus of a new short film produced by Spotify, which premiered at the House of ICON last Saturday. The ‘House of ICON’ event also highlighted the lasting relevance of legacy artists, emphasizing the unique blend of nostalgia and modernity that the programme aims to bring to today’s listeners.

Port Grand the city’s iconic harbour front development launched “The Grand Geetmala,” an enjoyable live musical experience that celebrates the timeless lyrics and songs of legendary subcontinental singers. “The Grand Geetmala” is the latest addition to Port Grand’s monthly entertainment calendar and will be a regular feature. This launch programme is designed to evoke nostalgia and pay tribute to the rich musical heritage of the subcontinent.
A private premiere show was held recently, attended by the city’s elite and notables. The evening unfolded with food, aesthetic settings and captivating performances, culminating in a memorable night that extended into the early hours of Sunday.

Celebrating 70 Years of PFBPWO
Pakistan Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Organization celebrated its 70th Anniversary on December 7, 2024. The organisation was founded by Dr. Salima R Ahmed (Late) in 1954 which was inaugurated by Begum Liaquat Ali Khan. It is presently headed by Ms. Nasreen Mahdi. A function was organized by the NGO to pay tribute to the pioneers appreciating their contribution. The chief guests were Sultana Siddiqui, Khanum Gauhar Aijaz, Mrs. Masuda Ahmed, Ms. Ayesha Islam, Ms. Akram Khatoon, Ms Rashida Raza, Begum Jamila Daud and Advocate Zia Awan.
The President in her speech highlighted the contribution of Dr. Salima R Ahmed, the founder who led the organization for 63 years. She pointed out that the NGO exists in seven cities of Pakistan and some of the projects the organization is running are Working Women’s Hostels, Schools, Craft Centres, Housing Societies and Medical Care Centres etc. and upcoming projects like Girls College in Gharo.
The function was attended by the members of the Pakistan Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Organisation and guests. The dances and skits presented by the students of Dr. S R A BPW Quality School were enjoyed by those present. Sultana Siddiqui, President Hum Network spoke about the days when she actively participated in the NGO and the work of Salima Ahmed. Each guest highlighted the early days of the organisation. Shields were presented to all the chief guests and gifts to school children.

Launch of The Carnivore
After the success of its branches in Islamabad, Lahore and Riyadh The Carnivore – Baked Meat Restaurant opened its doors here recently with the who’s who of the city participating along with consul generals of Karachi. After a bustling red carpet, the guests were ushered to their seats where they were treated to a high-end, sit-down dinner of their choice. The restaurant’s motto, ‘Service within three minutes’ has built their reputation over the years across their chain of restaurants for not only adhering to their claims but also offering unique and healthful cuisine. Thus, The Carnivore has become the fastest-growing chain of restaurants both within Pakistan and abroad.
Speaking on the occasion the brains behind the venture, the brother duo Shoaib and Zohaib, expressed their delight at launching a branch in Karachi. Said Shoaib “I am overwhelmed by the support and love we have received since we came here, and are very excited that we are now in this wonderful city that appreciates diversity in cuisine.”
