Seat 1C – A Survivor’s Tale of Hope

The Lahore Literary Festival witnessed the much-anticipated launch of Seat 1C: A Survivor’s Tale of Hope, Resilience, and Renewal,’ a memoir by Zafar Masud, one of the two survivors of the 2020 PIA plane crash in Karachi. Written in collaboration with Syeda Amna Hasan, the book captures Masud’s reflections on survival, faith, and life’s true priorities.

During the session, moderated by journalist Tooba Masood, Zafar Masud shared his motivations for writing the book, emphasizing the invaluable life lessons he learned post-crash. “I wanted to share my experiences so that people could understand what it feels like to come so close to death and how it changes one’s perspective on life,” he stated.

Masud rejected the notion that his survival was purely due to his seat location, attributing it instead to divine will. However, recognizing the significance of Seat 1C as a powerful symbol, the publisher chose it as the book’s title. The memoir also explores the crucial role of his loved ones in his recovery and how their support helped him overcome trauma.

Syeda Amna Hasan provided insights into the writing process, explaining that the book was built from Masud’s memories, supplemented by interviews with eyewitnesses, the other crash survivor, rescue workers, and aviation authorities. “Our challenge was to tell the story in a way that was respectful to those who suffered while ensuring it remained engaging and informative,” she said.

Masud hopes the book will inspire readers to reflect on their own life priorities and make choices that contribute positively to their communities. Concluding the session, he urged audiences to read the book, stating, “Seat 1C offers lessons that can help others reshape their perspectives on resilience and renewal.”

Transforming Karachi: CHF’s One Million Trees Project Flourishes at Kidney Hill Park

Published

on

The Climate Hub Forum (CHF), in partnership with environmental steward Abdullah Rafi, successfully conducted a monumental plantation drive at Kidney Hill Park, introducing 500 indigenous plants to the urban landscape. This initiative, led by CHF’s Public Relations Advocate Humera Hashmi, who personally handed over the plants to Mr. Rafi, marks a significant advancement in CHF’s ambitious One Million Trees Project, aiming to combat Karachi’s escalating heat and environmental degradation.

Karachi’s Climate Challenge

Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling metropolis, has been grappling with intensifying heatwaves and rising temperatures. Over the past six decades, the city has experienced a 2.4ºC increase in nighttime temperatures and a 1.6ºC rise during the day

These alarming trends have led to severe heat-related health crises, including a devastating heatwave in 2015 that claimed over 1,200 lives

In response to these pressing challenges, CHF has been at the forefront of mobilizing communities towards sustainable environmental practices. The One Million Trees Project is a testament to this commitment, focusing on large-scale reforestation to restore natural habitats, improve air quality, and mitigate the urban heat island effect. By engaging local residents, organizations, and stakeholders, CHF fosters a sense of collective responsibility and action towards a greener Karachi.

For years, Abdullah Rafi has been a driving force in Karachi’s environmental conservation efforts. As the President of the Rotary Club of Karachi Environment, his leadership has been instrumental in transforming barren landscapes into thriving green sanctuaries. His unwavering dedication to ecological restoration has not only enhanced the city’s green cover but has also inspired countless individuals to partake in environmental stewardship. The successful plantation at Kidney Hill Park exemplifies the power of collaborative action.
