The Kingdom of Retribution by Adeela Suleman

Adeela Suleman’s latest exhibition, The Kingdom of Retribution, is nothing short of breathtaking. Inspired by Michelangelo’s iconic ‘The Last Judgment.’ Her wooden sculptures brought a timeless narrative into a contemporary light. The works invited visitors to delve into the complex interplay of morality, justice and redemption, concepts just as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
Each artwork echoed with profound imagery: tormented souls surrounded by demons, angels heralding a spiritual awakening with their trumpets, and the presentation of the Book of Deeds, urging viewers to reflect on their choices and the broader moral fabric of society. Suleman’s masterful carvings offered an arresting portrayal of humanity’s eternal struggle between light and darkness.
Adding another dimension to the exhibition was the hauntingly beautiful musical composition, Sada e Mehshar: Raag Marwa in D Flat 9th. Specially composed by Arshad Mahmud and Ustad Nafees Ahmed, the music enveloped the gallery with a meditative ambiance that transported listeners to another realm.
This masterful blend of Pakistani and Western classical music utilized sitars, surbahar, tabla, and tanpuras alongside violins, oboes, French horns, and the church organ. Together, the instruments created an emotional tapestry that perfectly complemented Suleman’s evocative sculptures. The music wove through the gallery having a narrative of its own, starting with a serene alaap and rising to a climactic fusion of sargams, taans and cymbal clashes.
From art enthusiasts to casual visitors, the exhibition left everyone contemplating their choices and the intricate moral dilemmas of modern life. As one attendee shared, “The synergy between the art and music created an unforgettable journey into the essence of humanity.”
