In a bid to advance children’s education in Pakistan, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) in collaboration with Room to Read, conducted a Writers’ Workshop and a 3-day Illustrators’ Workshop recently at Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi. The workshop aimed to empower aspiring writers to create and produce books for children in Pakistan including high-quality, lively, and fun-filled illustrations for children’s books.

Both workshops were led by literacy and literary experts, including Global Literacy Advisor from Room to Read, Mahesh Pathirathna, and renowned Pakistani author and illustrator, Rumana Husain, who has over 75 publications to her name. Emerging and experienced writers, illustrators and educationists from across Pakistan including Chitral, Hunza, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Lahore, Rahim Yar Khan, Awaran and Karachi gathered to create captivating content for children.

Baela Raza Jamil, CEO of ITA, stated that last year ITA and Room to Read collaborated with three publishers to create 15 books for children aged four to eight. “We hope this year’s workshop will increase that number,” she added. Incidentally, the World Education Medals have announced the extraordinary leaders who have made remarkable contributions to education across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Baela Raza Jamil, the only finalist from Pakistan, has been shortlisted for the prestigious World Education Medals.
